What Students Remember Most from Cambridge Summer School

Cambridge Through Our Students' Eyes

When students return home from Cambridge, what do they remember most?

When students reflect on their time in Cambridge, they often talk about much more than academics. They remember the people they met, the confidence they discovered, the atmosphere of the College, the friendships they built, and the moments that helped them see their future differently.

Their reflections offer a unique insight into what makes an educational experience truly transformational.

Taking the First Step Beyond Your Comfort Zone

For many students, arriving in Cambridge is much more than joining an academic programme.

It is their first experience travelling abroad independently, living away from home, and navigating a new environment without their family.

"Being 16 and already in Cambridge and living like a college student has really opened my mind."

"Yes, we're going to exploreto a city, yeah, to the centre of Cambridge. And I'm going to buy souvenirs formy family. Oh, by the way, I want to thank my mom and my dad because they gave me this opportunity to come alone, to travel alone to the UK for the first time."

These first experiences often become important milestones. They encourage students to become more independent, more adaptable, and more confident in unfamiliar situations.

Learning to Think Differently

Academic experiences are often remembered not because of the content itself, but because of the way students are encouraged to think.

" I like the fact that in all these classes, they encourage us to be better, to think outside the box, a lot of critical thinking, to view from different perspectives. And I really like how they also encourage us to be ambitious and to think of us as capable of getting in a university as incredible as Cambridge is.  I really enjoy that and it has really changed the way I think about a lot of things.”

For many participants, Cambridge style learning introduces a different approach to education. Students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, explore ideas, and engage actively with complex topics.

Discovering New Interests

Sometimes the most memorable lessons are the ones students never expected toenjoy.

"My favourite session was the one about laundering money, because they teach us about how enterprises make fraud. And I didn't know anything about it. It just caught my interest because I never heard it before.
- How are these companies getting away with this exactly? It was really incredible. I would really encourage you to come here to the programme and experience this by yourselves."

Exposure to new subjects, ideas, and real-world challenges often helps students discover interests they may never have encountered in a traditional school environment.

Meeting People from Around the World

For many students, one of the most valuable parts of the experience is the international community.

“My first experience of foreign acquaintance and friendship! We were playing football with some other guys in other groups, like some boys from Romania, and some of them are from Spain. And, when I think about those yelling, shooting, dribbling, about football, I'm actually still passionate right now, even now!”

"I arrived knowing nobody. Now I have friends from all around the world. Meeting people from different countries and backgrounds was one of the most valuable parts of the experience."

These friendships expose students to new cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking while creating memories that oftencontinue long after the programme ends.

Falling in Love with Cambridge

Students frequently speak about Cambridge itself.

The Colleges, green spaces, historic buildings, Common Rooms, sports grounds, and the atmosphere of the city become an important part of the experience.

"Oh, the rooms are actually very nice, and everyone is actually very warm. And I like the layout of the common room, the lectures, and the dorms. So, yeah, I like, I really like the campus. And I would want to come back one day."

With its unique blend of history, academic excellence, and student life, Cambridge leaves a lasting impression on many young people experiencing it for the first time.

Finding Future Direction

Perhaps the most powerful theme running through many student reflections is clarity.

Experiencing university style learning, exploring different academic pathways, and learning from academics and professionals often helps students think differently about their future.

“I'm doing my applications for university next year and is a tough decision in everyone's life. And here in Cambridge, I learned a lot about what I want to do in the future. I got to experience a lot of different pathway classes, and I got to learn from a lot of professionals from different areas.

"Now I really have a clear set future. And I realized that from undergraduate to postgraduate, I can do really whatever I want."

For students approaching important academic decisions, this kind of exposure can be invaluable.

More Than a Summer Programme

Looking across these reflections, a common theme emerges.

Students rarely talk first about timetables or lesson plans.

Instead, they remember the confidence they gained, the people they met, the subjects that inspired them, the city they explored, and the new possibilities they discovered for themselves.

These are the experiences that continue to matter long after the programme ends and what make educational journeys truly transformational.

Be Inspired. Be Cambridge.
